How to Unroot your Rooted Epic 4G Touch Back to EL29 Stock ROM!

If for some reason you don’t like your custom ROMs or you want to return your rooted Epic 4G Touch back to Sprint for warranty, here’s how to completely unroot your Epic 4G Touch.

Step 1. Put your Epic 4G Touch into download mode by holding down Volume Down and Power button together for about 5 seconds.  When you see the Warning screen below, hit the Volume up button.

Step 2. When you see the download mode like below, don’t connect your USB cable yet.

Step 3. Download Epic4GTouchUnrootEL29.zip and unzip, you will find a file called SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe.  Double-click on it to run the program, this will launch ODIN program.

Download Epic4GTouchUnrootEL29.zip

Step 4. Now connect a USB cable from your Epic 4G Touch to your computer.

Step 5. Hit “Start” and your Epic 4G Touch will start to restore EL29 stock ROM.

Step 6. When it’s all finished (it should take like 20 minutes), your phone will reboot and you will still see that Superuser app is there.  If you just want to use the stock rooted ROM, you can stop here.  If you are going to return for warranty, let’s remove the Superuser app.

Step 7. Install ES File Explorer from the Market and launch the program.

Step 8. Under settings, make sure Root Explorer and Mount File System are both checked.

Step 9. Select Favorites, then “/”.

Step 10. Find the Superuser.apk file under /system/app directory and erase it.

Step 11. Now, let’s go one step further and reset your phone back to factory.  Reboot into Android system recovery by holding down Volume down and Power button together for about 5 seconds.

Step 12. Choose “wipe data/factory reset” and hit the Power button.

Step 13. Choose “Yes”.

Step 14. Reboot your phone and you should find your Epic 4G Touch has been completely unrooted, personal settings/apps erased.

If you are going to return your Epic 4G Touch to Sprint for warranty, make sure you delete any personal files in the internal storage or microSD card beforehand as those are still there.

Ok. when on downloading mode on in Odin, I plugged in USB and Odin 1.85 doesnt see it. If I am on Android Home page desktop (on phone, meaing I let phone booted normally), then Odin sees it, but not on downloading mode (when pressing Down + Power). It seems it doenst turn on USB on this (not anymore, it did at one point when I rooted it, and now trying to unroot). How do I force odin on phone to turn on usb port? Cable is good. I change drivers many times, delete and fresh install drives on Windows 7 x64, switched USB ports, switched cables, and nothing! HELP!!!

OH, not only I have the yellow triangle, but it also says Samsung Galaxy S II GT I9100 (which I need to remove the triangle, counter, and the GT I9100, since this is not the Int’l model and I flashed the rom with an Int’l model with rooted EL29, and cant return to Sprint or they wont accept)

    • Bob says:

I was having the same problem with getting the PC to ‘see’ the phone while in download mode. I believe you have to hit the volume up button before plugging in the cable in order for the process to work.

      • david jones says:

i have been following your how to video and the things that you see when you open the first zip file and what i see are 2 different things, also where you say you get odin. I am not clear i try to zoom the screen so that i can see the website but i can not make it out . can you please e-mail me very detailed instructions on how to root the sprint galaxy s2 epic 4G touch with the fl24 version? and please spell out the websites and the names of what when and where. i am computer savvy, but this not understanding exactly where you have to go to get what is driving me nuts and i am about to give up

        • alex says:

go download the stock restore odin one click for the fl24 rom then put your phone in download mode. (vol down plus power) a yellow box with (com…) it could be any number. click start. give it some time and it should say pass in blue. then your are on stock fl24. but you might want to try out the ff18 4.2.2 slimbean rom

  29. Biff says:

After unrooting back to stock will I still be able to receive updates from Sprint as normal? Like when they finally decide to release ICS for our phones?

    • Abraham Youhana says:

That’s what I was wondering too. Rumor has it, the ICS update is coming out on the 12th.

      • Gabriel says:

I unrooted my phone 3 hours ago and I haven’t received the OTA update for ICS. I had the rooted stock FF18 on my phone and the battery life sucked, so I unrooted back to EL29 =/
My wifes phone had the same battery drainage problem. The Android OS cosumed 10% of battery every hour.

  30. Lucas says:

was it supposed to delete all my apps and contacts or is it just rebooting and going to find all that info?

    • admin says:

yes will delete all your apps/settings if you do Steps 11 and on, you can stop at Step 11 if you don’t want to erase apps/settings.

  31. alex says:

went to unroot and odin says pass but the phone will not turn on! it will go into download mode and my custom recovery it just won’t turn on! please help

  32. Tori says:

Hi, I already unrooted back to the rooted stock rom before I came across your site. When I unrooted back to stock rom, I noticed the superuser app was still in my apps. I tried to uninstall and couldn’t. Then I saw an option to disable it, then uninstalled it from google apps. I thought it worked until I saw a grayed out picture of the superuser app still in my app menu! I tapped it and it said app is no longer available…yet the icon is still there?? So I came across your site and did steps 7 and 8. My problem is when I go to root settings and try to check “Root Explorer” it comes up with a screen that says “When ‘SU Request’ dialog popup, please select ‘always allow’ or make system ‘remember’ your ‘allow’ choice. Do you want to try this feature anyway?” I selected “Yes”. Then it says “Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone.” What do I do?! I’m so lost :( PLEASE HELP! I’m noob and this phone was given to me with it already rooted and I’m trying so hard to COMPLETELY unroot. BTW, It had the OTA update installed after it was “unrooted”. I’m thinking that might have something to do with the issue I’m having?? Any help appreciated, thank you!! (Sorry for long post!)
