For those of you who want to root ICS on your Epic 4G Touch FF18, here’s the easiest method for doing so. This will also get you updated straight from any custom ROM to the official FF18 with root.
UPDATE: Please see updated FI03 ICS root method!!!
If you are still on Gingerbread and you want to upgrade to ICS, you can use this root method to get ICS and root at same time and no need to unroot first.
Before we begin, PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF EVERYTHING, as this root method may erase EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE!
The idea is pretty, simple, simply put your Epic 4G Touch into ODIN download mode, unzip and run the EXE file, then profit!
Enjoy~

can i flash this in stock recovery?
Unfortunately, I can’t mount my phone to my mac now and I really need to get to the SD card because Mybackup pro isn’t finding my last backup. Looks like I am going back to Calkulin’s last ROM.
…and Clockwork recovery isn’t working. Just hangs and says it isn’t responding. Awesome.
Oh crap. And to make it worse, I can’t reboot in to recovery manually (holding down up volumen and power), that just boots phone normally. I tried to install ROM from SD card with CWM, wouldn’t do it. Just now, boot phone in “Downloading”mode (volume down + power) and can’t get it to connect to PC at all, even after installing USB drivers over and over. Looks like I am stuck with this stock ICS for ever now. And, with none of my data, as I can’t get to it. Lovely. If anyone has any advice……
Is there a custom recovery yet for the update ff18 i just rooted my phone withe the update but i cant find a custom recovery to flash new roms thanks bro
For FF18, you can use this guide to install CWM:
http://epic4gtouchroot.com/epic-4g-touch-kernels/how-to-avoid-emmc-brick-by-installing-safe-kernelrecovery-on-rooted-epic-4g-touch/
I would also like some insight on what recovery to install. can someone post a link to what to dl and how to instal it please
Install the safe kernel here, it’s for FF18:
http://epic4gtouchroot.com/epic-4g-touch-kernels/how-to-avoid-emmc-brick-by-installing-safe-kernelrecovery-on-rooted-epic-4g-touch/
I’m on FF18, and I just installed that recovery. Now for some reason, I’m getting yellow triangle. I hadn’t gotten it before. What to do now?
I’m guessing what I should do is flash back entirely to Gingerbread, then install this kernel then install FF18? I probably should do things in an order that makes sense. Question is, when I root FF18, why did it act like it wasn’t a rooted phone?
So I have an Epic 4G touch, MN:SPH-D710 (sprint) and kernel version 3.0.15-sph-d710.ff18-cl663858. Running on ICS 4.0.4. I was wondering if this rooting method would still work for my phone. If not, please give my any advice or send me a link of a site that would be able to root this phone. Thanks so much.
-Cheers
I have the same model as yours. I followed all of the directions, pausing at each step to make sure I was doing everything right. I had no idea what I was doing so I wanted to be sure everything would work. It’ll work fine as long as you follow the directions.
He also has the same model as ours in his video. Cheers!
I finally did the upgrade and I am not happy with ICS it is indeed very laggy. I tried to uninstall all bloatware and cleared everything that needs to be cleaned still ICS is very very laggy.
@Admin – Is there a way that I can go back to my previous version? Can I go back to Gingerbread using your earlier tutorial posted back in February 3, 2012?
I would really love to go back to Gingerbread and get back my CM mods and my not laggy SPH-D710.
As always thank you for your help Admin!
Yes you can simply re-install safe kernel, reboot to recovery, then restore GB ROM or install GB custom ROM.
Thanks Admin! I actually did the ‘downgrade’ last night and it work flawlessly. I got my non-laggy SPH-D710 back =) very happy with it, for some reason the UI is much more smoother? eh? I guess it’s because I did a full wipe of my phone. Anyway your tutorial rocks – you rock! Thank you!
so when i get to the odin execution i get 0:[COM4]. I already have ics from the sprint update but i want to root my phone. so ????
I am wondering the same thing, I too have officail ICS FF18..how would i go about rooting? all i need is wireless tether…thnx in advance
You can use this method fine.
If already on FF18 then this is redundant. What I’m noticing is that, having done this, I still do not actually have root access. I just have ICS. Why is it that I have no root access from this?
you are claiming that this method is redundant, then saying you had issues with it. I mean no offense, really, but that leads me to assume you skipped a step you deemed unnecessary, and that is what the issue is. I used this method exactly as it is stated, from a stock ICS, and it worked perfectly. I have full root access and everything. Also, what makes you say you dont have root access? Certain programs sometimes inaccurately claim you do not have root access. So, check to see if SuperUser or SuperSU or whatever is installed. If one of them is, go into its settings and set it to auto-approve root access requests.
(sorry for possible unneeded information. i wil not be able to check back on this till around noon so i wanted to provide as much info as i could)
Redundant means a repetition of something. So if on FF18 why flash to FF18? In no way does that contradict or conflict with me saying there was an issue with there being no root access. I followed the steps exactly as given but, strangely enough, no root access (Superuser was not on there, I checked). Remember, people often do the same thing and get different results with technology, and then argue with each other. I’ve seen it.
I have since hunted down a rooted FF18 ROM that installed correctly giving me root access like I needed. It’s stable and works fine, so I’m happy (other than the missing WIFI hotspot hack, but I’ll figure that out in time).
if you flash this in ODIN you would have root.
That’s the weird part. I used Odin and it still didn’t have root. I have since found an FF18 rooted ROM and it works fine now. However someone above me clearly needs help understanding the definition of redundant and an explanation of how this doesn’t actually contradict saying it’s not rooted, cuz clearly someone is confused.
If my understanding is correct if you found another ff18 rom to install then you must have root in order to install it, which means you did have root , but for some odd reason you had no supersu app icon showing.
Nope, I had to start entirely over to flash it. I don’t know why I had no root access, but I am willing to accept it was a fluke. Presently I went back and installed the latest Blu Kuban rom and I’m happy for now
Using this method to root killed my wifi… how do i get it back? kinda important ya know? lol.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced the wifi issue noted by Sean?
I actually resolved the issue lastnight a couple hours after that post. All I did was cycle off and on the wifi toggle a few times and then enable/disable Airplane mode once and wifi functionality came back
Awesome! thanks for the confirmation Sean much appreciated.
No problem. I am curious as to why it happened in the first place. FYI for anyone interested, a reboot did NOT solve the issue for me. I had to disable and re-enable wifi and do the same with airplane mode to get functionality back. So a word of caution, anyone experiencing what I did MIGHT have to go thru the fix process every time you reboot. Cant say fro sure since I havent rebooted since I got wifi working again
Hey Sean & Thread,
I as well had success with these steps. Worked fine no hitch – I didn’t experience the temp loss of wifi or need to run any of the work around steps provided by Sean. I do notice a little ‘unsteadyness’ in my 3G signal at times but it’s not a deal breaker for me at least. I was coming from the stock build (from store). Thanks all, this was cool as I was coming from a diff model/vendor which I had for a while rooted and that couple of months no root was a bust!!! now I have root again ^_^
I have stock ICS and would like to use this method, this is my first root and I’m wondering if it is going to wipe / erase everything as it did in the video (in the video you were upgrading from GB i believe, so I was wondering if it made a difference that I will be starting with ICS).
*if so, is there an app I can use to back up everything in my phone including apps and app data and phone settings? everything I have found so far such as titanium and go backup require the phone to already be rooted, which is a bit of a catch 22. thanks in advance, your tutorials are awesome!
This method wipes nothing is already at ICS FF18. At least, it didnt wipe anything of mine.
thanks for the reply, I have contacts and email synced with gmail so I’m not worried about losing those, but all my apps, settings, pics, and general layout I’m hoping will stay the same. obviously I’m new at this…
I understand. When I did it i didnt lose a thing, so my money is that you wouldnt either
yup. it did. deleted everything. godDAMmit.
well at least the rooting worked..
hm, thats odd. i didnt lose anything at all
Sean punk’d you. It absolutely wipes everything. Now that you’re rooted, you may want to back everything up using Titanium Backup.
Sean punk’d nobody… I followed the steps exactly as described and lost NOTHING.
Sean, don’t be a bully. We are all trying to help each other out here.
apparently you are not, for some reason you are obsessed with trolling me
FF18 is the only stable ICS where I have been able to get everything to work. The one thing I don’t have now is a hacked Sprint Hotspot. Everything I find on how to get the Hotspot hacked involves being on a different ROM or kernel or build. Is there a simple way to just put the hack onto this build and have it work?
Download wifi tether for root.
Yep, it’s what I ultimately had to do. Don’t like it like I do the stock, but whattayagonnado, ya know?
I used this root last month and today I started getting OTA update notifications. Is there a way to block the update?
there’s I think files that start with FWupgrade.apk and fota somethin in /system/app directory you can delete i think.
I’ve gotten this OTA update as well. Will the updates be applied to the stock rooted em or can we download a new one?
/System/Etc/Security and rename the file “otacerts.zip” to “otacerts.zip.bak
This doesn’t work in stopping the update notices
First thank you for the tutorials. I fallowed your first on to root my S2, I did the ota update and now I’m unrooted. But I have fh13 how do I reroot it? I still have supperuser but rootchecker says I’m not rooted. Thanks again!
I had the same problem. I ended up redoing the entire process all over again, but now I get an annoying update notification that won’t go away.
I keep getting harrased to upgrade to FH13 is there any way to upgrade via odin to a rooted version?
I’d like to know the same thing.
I found a way to block the annoying update notification: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832496
Hello Max,Thanks for all the info you have provided us,awsome website. I have a question ,i just bought the Galaxy S2 from Boostmobile,Whats the Correct root method for this Phone ? I’m afraid to brick my phone if i Choose the wrong method.
Any info will be apreciated.
Thanks, Richard
Is that an Epic4GTouch???
Yes it is, model # is SPH-D710BST
baseband version S:D710 .10 S.FH29
i see on your website you have root for FF18,EL29
i dont know which one to use
Frist thanks for the site. easiest place on the net for epic. I used your method to upgrade to ff18 (epic4g rooted). I tried your earlier method but being in a hurry at work I think in odin I installed a old kernel bc i am stupid and never clear my downloads. when i went to restart got the yellow triangle. I re updated with you new method at it was all good, except wi-fi. tried the toggle trick and it was nothing. so what did I do wrong and how can i fix it?
will this work for the samsung transform
Yea I hoped it would. The strange thing is that it works on new wi-fi networks. It only does not work on networks saved before the upgrade?
Admin, i too, would like to know if you have a root for SGS2 epic touch on BOOST MOBILE SPH-D710bst. fh29. I have visited other sites but Im drawn to this one. Seeing you respond to all questions gives me a certain confidence in this site.
Help! followed the instructions to root my phone and now I’m stuck in a boot loop where my phone gets to my home screen and after about 10 seconds, freezes and then reboots to the sprint screen. What should I do??
